How to Improve Your Eyesight

Dr. Richard Nielson -- With so much in our world -- pollution, constant exposure to computer and TV screens, stress, and other factors -- contributing to eyestrain, here are seven basic tips to help keep your "windows to the world" clear and in optimum health.

You know what the eyes are called -- windows to your soul. These delicate organs are vital to our sense of well-being. There is much around us today that causes eye-strain -- pollution, extensive exposure to TV and computers, stressful lives - to name a few. By consciously caring for your eyes, you can reduce their negative impact.

Seven simple ways to improve your eyesight

To ease the strain on your eyes and improve its overall health, there are few things you can do in your daily life. Although they might not cure any eyesight issues you may have, these simple measures go a long way in ensuring that your eyes remain in optimal health. Over time, such care along with regular eye health exams, will reduce medical problems.

1. Exercise your eyes: There are number of easy yet effective eye exercises that you can do on a regular basis to relieve strain. Palming your eyes with warm hands, rolling your eyes, focusing at a distant point every now and then are a few.

2. Sleep right: As eyes are under constant strain over the day, they need sufficient time to recoup. Regular sleep for over 7-8 hours daily provides the eyes restorative time to repair and recover.

3. Eat right: Its best to consume sufficient quantities of nutritious foods like green leafy vegetables (e.g., spinach), fish, carrots, lentils/legumes and eggs. Such a diet is rich in Vitamins A, C, E and other minerals, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids -- all of which are key nutrients to keeping eyes healthy.

It is also very important to avoid dehydration, so drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day.

4. Wear prescribed corrective lenses: Ensure that you are diligent in following your doctor's advice regarding any prescription for eye glasses or contact lenses. Since your eye power can change over time, its best to have a regular schedule to check your eye power.

5. Protect your eyes: TV, computers, smartphones, iPads -- eyes are relentlessly exposed these days to screens of various kinds. Take care to relax your eyes every 30 minutes by looking away from the screen for a few minutes, gazing at a distant point and relaxing your eyes.

Remember to wear sunglasses that protect you from UV rays when out as exposure to harsh sunlight for long periods can cause damage. Wear protective goggles if you are working with any construction material or other hazardous material.

6. Avoid smoking: Smoking has been proven to cause increased incidences of macular degeneration, cataracts and optic nerve damage.

7. Regular eye exams: This is the most important of all things you can to do to improve your eyesight. When you get regular eye health exams you are able to spot any issues right at the outset and take immediate steps to address it.
