Follow-Up: Finish With A Flourish
If the interviewer says he or she will contact you, politely ask what his or her timetable is for making a decision. If he or she doesn't say anything about calling you with a decision, ask if you can contact him or her in a few days to check on the status of the hiring process.
Make sure to write and send a thank you note within 24 hours, if not the same day. Not only is it expected and professional courtesy, it will also serve as a reminder to the interviewer concerning your appropriateness for the position. If the job contact was made online or via email, send an email thank you note immediately after the interview. Follow that with a "hard copy" letter by "snail mail."
Finally, follow up with a phone call if you're not contacted within a week of when the interviewer indicated you would be.
