Tips for Attending A College Fair
If you have never been to a college fair before, here is what you can expect:
Rows of college tables staffed by representatives there for you, to answer your questions and take your name and address so they can send you materials after the fair.
If you research colleges before you go to the fair, you will know which college tables you should go to and you will have questions ready for the representatives. If you do not do any research before the fair,
or if you are having a hard time figuring out which colleges are you best choices, you have a few options:
- You can go to as many college tables as possible at the fair, collecting information and giving reps your name and address for their follow-up; and
- You can speak with an advisor in the one-to-one counseling area and get some suggestions. For example, an advisor can help you develop a list of colleges at the fair offering the major/s of interest to
you. Or, you might be particularly interested in a combined degree program, where you can earn both a bachelor’s degree and a masters degree in four or four and a half years of study. Again, an
advisor can help you identify colleges offering that option so you can target the right representatives to visit.
Workshops on financial aid
Make sure you attend one of these workshops. There is no mystery to applying for financial aid, but there are important facts and deadlines that you have to know to get money to pay for your education. You
are the one going to college, not your parents or guardians, so do not leave it to them to get this important information for you.
One-to-One counseling
This is your opportunity to speak privately with an experienced counselor, to ask questions and to get advise about any area of college admissions.
You will also have an opportunity to enter a scholarship raffle that could win you $500 toward your college expenses. To enter, complete your raffle post card either received by mail or at the site. Drop your
raffle card in the designated box near the exit of each fair.
