CAREER CENTER'S POLICY FOR ARCHIVING CREDENTIALS FILES
The Canisius College Career Center has maintained inactive Educator’s Credentials files in archival status. Because inactive credentials files contain outdated evidence of professional ability and are not effective in securing employment, changes were made to our original policy to better serve our candidates. Good career management practices require that the Career Center place limits on the period of time an inactive file can remain archived. Effective August 1, 2003, all Educator’s Credential’s Files that have been inactive for ten (10) years or longer would be removed and shredded under secure conditions as time permits.
• The first phase has been completed – all files dated before 1980 have been destroyed except for those reclaimed by written request.
• The second phase is almost completed – all files dated between 1981 through 1990 will be removed and destroyed by April 2009.
• The third phase – all files dated between 1991 and 1995 will be removed and destroyed by October 2009.
Most alumni will have originals of these materials in their own files. If, however, you would like to reclaim your inactive file, please send us your request in writing with a printed and signed signature to: Career Center, Canisius College, 2001 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14208.
All materials will be returned to you except for confidential letters of recommendation. If you do not wish to reclaim your inactive file, we will dispose of it consistent with the requirements of the Family Education Right and Privacy Act (FERPA).
If you have any questions concerning this policy, please contact the Career Center at 716-888-2475.
