Workshops on Essential Skills
Selected Saturdays, 10:00a.m.-3:00p.m., Scaife Hall, lecture room2. The workshops are geared toward graduate students, postdocs, and faculty but open to everyone. Each workshop is an independent unit so that You can attend number or combination of events. Continental breakfast (9:30 am) & lunch are included. The cost is $8/workshop in advance. Course credit is available, see website.

SEP. 12 Training for Success (for graduates and postdocs)
Selecting research questions, developing a training & career development plan, establishing an advising committee, finding mentors, avoiding common pitfalls, managing time & stress.

OCT. 24 Making Oral Presentations
Preparing and delivering an effective resarch seminar; maintaining the audiences/ interest; making and using visual aids; dealing with stage fright and emergencies; the challenge of communicating Your work to a lay audience.

NOV. 7 Teaching
Designing Your course; developing a grading plan; lecturing and leading discussions; balancing teaching with others responsibilities; common problems and how to handle them; accommodating differences.

JAN. 23 Writing Research Articles
The process of writing and publishing a research article; key issues to address; dealing with writer's block; determining authorship; selecting a journal; handling rejection;presenting Your data.

FEB. 6 Grant Writing
Identifying funding agencies; components of an application; the process of applying; the importance of writing for the reviewers, testing hypotheses, having contingency plans, and talking to program officers.

MAR. 20 Advanced Professional Skills
How to succeed in Your next position; how to recruit, supervise, and mentor students and staff; dealing with conflict in the workplace.

APR. 10 Job Hunting
Preparing for a job hunting (it's never too early!); strategies for successful interviewing; negotiation exercise.
