Cansius College is a Catholic, Jesuit institution grounded in the Jesuit tradtion of cura personalis ("care of the individual"). Deaf education is a broad and diverse professional field that centers on the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. It may be considered one of the most rewarding fields in education. Our intens come from all walks of life with both education and non-education backgrounds. We accept up to 12 students each fall to begin the program.
The Deaf Education program is a chort program. Students complete two years of full time study including a rigorous 12 credit hour student teaching component in various classrooms for students who are deaf or hard of hearing both in the United States and Canada. Upon completion of New York State mandated teacher exams, our interns can recieve certification in teaching deaf and hard of hearing students, and, if needed, childhood or adolescent teacher education. Our graduates also recieve certification from The Council on the Education of Deaf (CED), the only national organization that grants approval to teacher preparation programs of teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Features of our Program:
It is the only programin Weatern New York to prepare teachers for students, ages birth through 21.

Graduate Interns experience practicum coordinated with coursework starting in the first semester.

Graduate Interns observe a cochlear theory and pedagogy, including cochlear impants, early Graduate education and transitioning.

Graduate Interns have an opportunity to live at St. Mary's School for the Deaf where we enjoy a cooperative relationship that has been in existence for more than 40 years.
