Internship Opportunities
Sun Sentinel Editorial Internships, South Florida
Sun Sentinel offers editorial internships year-round for college students. Both paid and for academic credit. We have a strong program that includes mentors and training. Many of our former interns are now on the professional staff of the newsroom.
Paid intern positions are primarily in the summer and for 10 weeks, usually beginning the first week in June. Interns are paid at the rate of minimum wage, which as of July 2009 was $7.25 per hour. Reporters and photographers must have cars and are reimbursed for mileage, parking and tolls while on assignment. Internships are open to college students, preferably juniors, seniors, recent graduates and graduate students. The ideal candidate will have experience on a college publication and a previous internship. Ability to speak a second language and knowledge of South Florida also are valuable. We do expect interns from their first day to have the skills to perform their assigned job at the level of an entry-level journalist.
Paid Internships
Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2009 for Summer 2010.
These 10-week paid internships will begin in early June 2010 for the following positions:
News Reporters
Business Reporter
Copy Editor
Page Designer
Graphics Artist
Photographer
Online Producer
Academic Credit Internships
Editorial internships for academic credit are available. While a salary is not offered, Sun Sentinel will complete necessary paper work for school credit. Reporters and photographers who use personal vehicles for assignments will be reimbursed for mileage and parking. Academic credit internships are available year-round and are offered in most departments of the newsroom, including broadcast and online.
To Apply
To apply for a paid or academic credit internship, send a letter indicating your area of journalism interest, a resume and 7-10 work samples. If you have a permanent as well as a college address, please provide both. Reporting clips, photographs, graphics and illustrations should be mounted or photocopied on 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper. Photos and artwork may be submitted on slides, CDs or DVDs. We discourage candidates from sending any material that must be returned, as this is not always possible. In the selection process, preference is given to those who have experience in journalism. Applicants should have worked for their college publication or have had a previous internship.

National Geographic 2010 Photography Internships
The National Geographic magazine will offer two photography internships during the summer or fall of 2010. The program is an opportunity for young photographers to
experience first-hand the rigors of life in the professional world. It is also an opportunity for us at the Geographic to scrutinize the work of those in whom we may have further interest. We are proud that many of our regular “shooters” are former summer interns.
One internship is automatically offered to the winner of the College Photographer of the Year contest administered by the University of Missouri, Columbia. For information go to www.cpoy.org.
The other internship is awarded based on a portfolio. It is primarily for college students – undergraduate or graduate—but we will also consider someone not currently in school. The purpose of the internship is experience and encouragement to those who aspire to be a photojournalist. Interns must be at least 21 years of age and U.S. citizens, or have appropriate student work documents.
Both internships are for fourteen weeks at a salary of $480 a week. When on assignment away from the city, the Geographic pays all expenses. Transportation expenses to and from Washington at the start and conclusion of the internship are covered by the Society. The interns are responsible for their own housing.
To apply, send us a single package that includes a portfolio of recent work (no more than 30 images), a resume, and a letter of recommendation from a photography teacher or established photojournalist. We are interested in strong photojournalism, your ability to produce a visual narrative, and original story ideas. CDs or DVDs are the preferred method of submission but portfolios may also be in the form of slides, prints or clippings of any combination, in color and/or black and white. Digital images should be JPEGs, sized to approximately 1600 wide, 72 dpi.
We will accept portfolios in early January and all must be postmarked by January 30, 2010.
Send to:
Susan Smith, Deputy Director of Photography
National Geographic Magazine
1145 17th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20036
Please clearly label your envelope, “NGM Photography Internship,” and if you would like for us to return your portfolio, you must include a self-addressed stamped envelope.
You should expect to hear from us by email in early March 2010.

Interns are assigned to a department based on their academic background, professional skills, interests, and career goals. Interns participate in the ongoing work of the department and complete specific projects or portions of larger departmental initiatives. Please see Departmental Descriptions for more information.

Attendance at all programming is required.
VISAS
International students are encouraged to apply. The Guggenheim Museum Internship Program is designated by the U.S. Government as a J-1 training program, and the museum will work with accepted applicants to assist them in procuring the necessary forms for a maximum three-month non-extendable and non-transferable J-1 visa. If you are applying for an internship lasting longer than three months, you are responsible for arranging your own J-1 visa through an independent host company to cover the entire period of your stay.
