A weeklong program for students and alumni to learn from practicing professionals in the fields of art and design. Through presentations and panels, we seek to provide strategies for self-sufficiency, skill building tools, and real world perspective.

SHINE COLLECTIVE: HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Monday, February 15th, 12:00 - 1:00 PM, Gateway 101
If you are thinking about starting your own business venture this session is for you. Learn what it takes to set up a business, what challenges may lay ahead, and learn how to make the most of online resources available to promote your brand. You will hear first hand from Co-Owner of Shine Collective, Jamie Campbell about Shine’s journey and how they curate the content of the store, how they work with artist & designers, offering insights into issues on both sides of the commercial spectrum, from designer and maker to seller and marketer. Additionally, you will learn how Shine is adapting to the needs of their clients and the economy.

THE ROLES OF ARTISTS WITHIN ARTS ORGANIZATIONS

Artists, educators and activists are continuing to define their roles within the art community; many have become well-established artists, curators, and educators who promote the work of others. Come to this session to hear a conversation with Jed Dodds (Creative Alliance) and René Treviño '05 (School 33), on their respective roles with two major community art programs in Baltimore City.

MAKING CONNECTIONS AND NETWORKING

This presentation will provide an opportunity to learn about how to appropriately network with fellow artists, collectors, and curators. You will learn how to balance your practice as an artist and how to collaborate and network with others. You will also hear how artists define success, their practice, and create their own opportunities and support the work of fellow artists.

PORTRAIT OF AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST
Tuesday, February 16th, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, Brown 309
In this session you will learn first hand what to expect when inevitably people want to get to know you better as an artist, visit you in the studio, interview you, or help promote your work by showcasing your talent. Moderated by Colette Veasey-Cullors '96, you will learn how Drury Bynum ‘91, chooses the artists he profiles in his Artist Profile videos, what it takes to shoot a professional video featuring artists, and simply how Drury developed his own voice as a director. You will also hear from Jim Lucio, a photographer, about his own work and his experience as “the subject”.

COTTONMONSTER(DOT)COM: BUILDING AND MARKETING AN INTERNET BUSINESS

Artists often wonder how to take their great idea from concept to final (successful) product. Do It Yourself ventures can grow quickly from a creative project to a full-blown business, using resources such as Internet marketing and sales. This program will inspire you and address resources, Internet venues like Etsy and blogs, self-promotion, business principles and practices.

RESPONSIBLE DESIGN PRACTICE
Wednesday, February 17th, 4:30 - 6:00 PM, Brown 309
In this program we will hear how designers address the philosophy and practice of designing physical objects, the built environment and services to address the principles of economic, social, and ecological sustainability. Many studios and companies are building concepts of sustainability into their business models. Designers in all media are doing work for social good and change, using their skills not just for commercial gain, while connecting to a larger network. Our guests will discuss a number of their environmentally conscious projects, and their designer-client relationships.

Picture this: like-minded, talented artists see the potential within a great space, and in an arts community, for the development of new galleries and live-work possibilities. When artists collaborate and have a curatorial vision, spaces like Nudashank and Gallery Four become a vital force in the local and regional art scene. Our guests will share their perspective on starting and sustaining their galleries, exhibition development and their relationships with artists, critics, and the community.
