Job Interview Pointers
JOB INTERVIEW POINTERS
1. Dress Appropriately:
• Men should wear jacket/tie or suit/tie
• Women should wear a business suit
(Unless told by employer to wear more casual clothes)
• Under no circumstances should you wear baseball caps, flip-flops, tight skirts/sweaters, heavy jewelry,
strong perfume/cologne, etc.
2. Be on time! If you are running late or cannot keep the appointment, PHONE the EMPLOYER.
3. Firm handshake (not too weak or strong)
4. Make eye contact
5. Be positive and pleasant. Everyone likes to work with an “up” person
6. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Research the company and know what they do, what the industry does, etc.
7. Practice answering interview questions (which you can find in a book, on the internet or from a list at the Career & Transfer Center)
8. Be prepared with examples of your work accomplishments and how you have dealt with disappointments
9. Ask for a business card at the end of the interview (gives you the correct spelling of the name and title of your interviewer)
10. Send a thank you note (handwritten or emailed)
