TITLE: Historic Site Interpreter (Park & Recreation Aide 4)
Historic Site Interpreter / Maintenance (Park & Recreation Aide 4)
SALARY: $10.57 per hour
BENEFITS: Option to join State Retirement System and the CSEA employee union
TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: May through October 2014

JOHNSON HALL was the 1763 Georgian estate of Sir William Johnson (1715 - 1774), the largest single landowner and most influential individual in the colonial Mohawk Valley, and Molly Brant, a Mohawk Indian. His success in dealing with the Six Nations had a lasting impact on their relationship with the English, and largely influenced England’s victory in the English-French struggle for control of colonial North America. The main house and flanking stonehouses, originally surrounded by a 700 acre farm, now interpret the Johnson family through guided tours of the period room settings, educational programs and special events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Curator of Education, the primary responsibility of the Historic Site Interpreter is to provide guided interpretive tours of the Johnson Hall property to the general public, and may also provide educational programs to schools and other organizations both on-site and off-site. The Interpreter will also assist staff with coordinating special events, completing special projects, conducting research, caring for historic collections, managing clerical tasks, performing certain maintenance tasks and with the general operations of the Historic Site.

In addition, the Historic Site Interpreter/Maintenance position will assist with the general maintenance of the Site’s grounds and buildings as part of the regular work week, under the supervision of the Site’s maintenance supervisor. The incumbent assists with mowing, trash removal, garden upkeep, trimming, historic house care, and all other aspects of historic site maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified candidates must demonstrate effective public presentation skills, an interest in local and regional history, and the ability to represent the Historic Site in a professional manner. Candidates must be able to work well with the general public and as a member of the Site team, and manage multiple tasks. Candidates must also be able to climb stairs and stand for extended periods of time. A valid driver’s license is necessary, and finger-printing will be required. Work schedules are determined upon hiring and are subject to change due to the Site’s operational and budget needs. Working on weekends, as well as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, is required. Occasional evenings are also necessary.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Submit resume, including three professional references with email addresses, to Darlene Rogers, Curator of Education, Johnson Hall State Historic Site, 139 Hall Avenue, Johnstown, NY 12095, or email to Applications will be accepted through the end of March, 2014.
