It is normal for new employees to feel pressured or have a difficult time at work because they still have to prove themselves to their colleagues, and most especially to their boss. They need to be able to let their new employer feel confident about putting them on the payroll and trusting them with a task that perhaps they are not experienced to do just yet.
There are so many situations that we are made to handle when we are new and inexperienced, and as difficult and challenging as they are, we just need to accept the responsibilities given to our care, and deal with them in the best way possible. Remember that the first few days in the office could prove to be very critical. Your colleagues may seem preoccupied with their own tasks, but that doesn't mean that they will not scrutinize you. And, although they might wish you well, some will still find fault in every move you make or task you accomplish. It is a tough world out there, and the first thing you need to learn is to become tougher than the world.
Face every single day with positivity, bring the best you, outweigh your fears, and inspire an all out effort to let everyone know that you are worthy of the position that you hold in the organization—that bringing you aboard was one of the best decisions your employer has made in his career. Now, in order to make a good and lasting impression, you need to follow these simple steps:
1. Be prepared -- go to work and prepare your questions about the company, how it works, and particularly everything that you need to know about your job; or perhaps just the important ones because you wouldn't want to make yourself look stupid in front of everyone. This will include your boss' expectations or the company's expectations too, so that you can work hand in hand in achieving your future goals.
2. Always come to work early -- it is okay to get to work on time. However, as a new employee, it is best to come to work a little early to have enough time to clean your desk, make your schedule for the day, or simply make yourself comfortable to start a new day.
3. Do your homework -- write down and remember all the new things that you learn everyday.
4. Get to know everyone -- chat with them but know your boundaries, especially the questions you make or the comments you leave. If you want to start and keep a healthy relationship with them, show courtesy and respect always.
5. Be loyal to your boss -- it is good for your career. Follow instructions and share your ideas with him, especially when you're asked to give one. Avoid embarrassing him and do not ever engage yourself with gossip starters in the office because this can lead to a serious problem in the future.
Whether you are a career-shifter or a fresh graduate, impressing everyone inside the office is a good way to start your new career. And if you keep it that way, then you need to prepare yourself for better career opportunities in the future, because the people you work with will surely recognize your efforts and will eventually help you towards reaching your career goals in life.
